Tuneful Tuesday Says: Be Brave, Happy, and Made of Titanium / #music / #sarabareilles / #pharrell / #guetta

It’s that time of year when people seem to be at their worst. At least, that’s how it seems to me here in Pittsburgh, PA, where median temps have ranged between -3 and 17 degrees for the past three weeks. Whether it’s a case of Seasonal Affective Disorder or purely related to the weather, I couldn’t say. Even I’m not immune to it and I’d describe myself as the eternal optimist, ever hopeful. Yesterday, I found myself having the worst of days—a total downer—and doubting everything about myself. My friends have been going down similar paths, as well.

Hilary is a writer who’s been working to gain a literary agent. The rejection e-mails keep coming and she’s fighting to stay positive. Jane recently lost her job. Though she’s spent over twenty years with a large firm, she’s still trying to find something after being let go at one of the worst times of the year—a week before Christmas. Cat is a single mother who has to wear every hat in her household. She has to fight for everything she has. These are not their real names, by the way. Just in case you were wondering.

So it’s for these three remarkable women that I dedicate this week’s Tuneful Tuesday post. Maybe you’ll listen to this music and it will inspire you, or maybe it won’t. Either way, this music and this post carries a heartfelt message from me: Don’t Give Up. Despite my moment yesterday, when I sat at the lowest point in the barrel possible, I never doubted I’d be able to climb back to the top. Neither should you.

Brave by Sara Bareillis

Sara Beth Bareilles is a singer-songwriter and pianist. She first moved into the music spot light in 2007, with the hit single Love Song. She’s sold more that one million albums in the US, is a five-time Grammy nominee, and is currently appearing as a celebrity judge on the third season of the sitcom, The Sing-off. This track, Brave, appears on the 2012 album, The Blessed Unrest and was Bareillis’ fifth Grammy nomination.

“You can be amazing. You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug.”

At the heart of this song is a very important message. Don’t be afraid to be brave. You are not alone.

Happy by Pharrell Williams

Admittedly, I had no idea who Pharrell Williams was until I say him as mentor on the voice. Maybe that means I’ve just crawled out from under a rock, or it could mean that I’m incredibly fortunate to be introduced to his music now. No matter what’s happened, there’s something about Pharrell Williams’ voice that simultaneously takes you back to another time and makes you want to dance. This release is from the Despicable Me 2, the first of many releases and collaborations for the artist, who also goes by “Pharrell.”

“Bring me down…can’t nothing bring me down.”

The American singer-songwriter is also a rapper, record producer, and fashion designer, as well as a drummer. He’s also a record producer and lead vocalist and drummer of the band N.E.R.D. Have a listen and see if you don’t feel happy.

Titanium feat. Sia by David Guetta

I loved Titanium long before Anna Kendrick sang the lyrics in the shower in the moved Pitch Perfect. It’s the “I’m not taking any crap” attitude of this song that draws me in every time.

“Shoot me down, but I won’t fall, I am titanium.”

Pierre David Guetta got his start as a French house music producer and DJ in the 1980s. Yet it wasn’t until his 2009 album One Love that he found mainstream success. His 2011 release, Nothing but the Beat, contained the track Titanium with another Tuneful Tuesday featured artist, Sia.

What I Hope My Friends Will Take Away…

Life is short. It’s a cluster of moments in which you have to grab hold of what you can. So…for Hillary, Jane, and Cat…Here’s my Tuneful Tuesday message to you.

Be brave.

Be Happy.

And if they shoot you down, don’t let yourself fall.
