Spring Author Series: Darlene Jones

Thank you Stephanie for allowing me to visit your blog. Thanks Darlene! Happy to have you here!

I’m a retired educator—teacher and principal at the junior high level. In Canada that’s grades 7 to 9 so 12 to 15 year-olds. I loved working with that age group, but most of my teacher friends from elementary thought I was crazy. And yes, the heroines of my books are teachers in their real lives or have strong connections to teachers.

A long time ago I lived in Mali. That experience, along with subsequent travels, has certainly shaped my thinking and that too is reflected in my writing. I’d love to wave a magic wand and make life better, especially in third world countries.

I’m in Mexico right now and spring here means the craziness of Semana Santa or Easter Week—a much bigger holiday than Christmas. Our little town of 3,000 will swell to 30,000 to 40,000 for the holiday. We’ll stock up on food and stay around the pool. Back home, on Vancouver Island, the cherry trees will soon be in blossom.

For the purposes of your Spring Author Series here’s a little about my books. I first played with the story line when I suffered from insomnia. I thought it would help me sleep. It didn’t. Instead, in the dark, I scribbled notes on yellow post-it pads—notes that I mostly couldn’t read in the morning.

The story soon took over my life. I’d make notes while I waited at red lights, in line at the grocery store, in the middle of dinner. I simply had to start writing. As wrote, revised and rewrote, the story line took on elements that I hadn’t originally intended. I wanted a love story, an adventure and I got it, but with the added dimension of sci-fi magic that allowed for the magical things the heroine could do.

My intent was to write one book, but the ending surprised me and forced me to write another. Three are done (the second will be published soon) and the fourth, which I’m working on now, may or may not be the last.I’m proud of what I’ve written—magical realism—and hope that readers will enjoy the unique world and characters that I have created.

  1. oooooh there’s a sequel? Darlene, you’ve just made my day, I can’t wait! I never did tell you how much enjoyed Embattled, did I? XX Great post, it’s lovely to learn more about you and your background. Thanks to Steph for hosting! 🙂

  2. I’m always amazed by the diverse and interesting lives authors have, and by what inspires or sets off that one small spark to lead to the writing of a novel. It seems Darlene is no exception. Good luck with all the books, Darlene, because magic is what makes the world a brighter place.

  3. Me too, Kit. Darlene, you HAVE to participate in LAHE’s new Welcome to My World feature. We want photos – and yours will be amazing! Be proud, sweetie. We deserve it! 🙂 x

  4. Hey, you’re all so awesome and so supportive. Thank you! Book 2 will be out soon. It may have more appeal for LAHE members as it’s focused more on the love story.

    1. I think Darlene’s middle name ought to be “Awesome.” I don’t know where to begin listing her virtues, but as for her writing, it sparkles, it entertains, it enthralls, and it makes me laugh and cry. What more could a person want from a book?
