HARBORSIDE NIGHTS, Book Two
HARBORSIDE NIGHTS is a sexy, hot, and evocatively real New Adult Romance series that follows a group of friends who have known one another for years as “summer” friends, and now come together after college to build their lives. They’re tough, edgy, and accepting—most of the time. This series is written in the same loving, raw, and emotional voice readers have come to love by New York Times & USA Today bestselling, award-winning author Melissa Foster.
In DISCOVERING DELILAH…
After the death of her parents on the day of her college graduation, Delilah Armstrong thought she could finally follow her heart and come out to her closest friends, but the guilt of going against her parents’ beliefs haunts her. The feelings she has for her best friend, Ashley, are stronger than anything she’s felt before, but Delilah has never even kissed a girl, and fear stops her at every turn.
Ashley Carver promised herself that she would never again date another girl who wasn’t out, but that was before she met intoxicatingly sweet and sexy Delilah.
When another girl offers to teach Delilah the ropes, it changes Delilah’s whole world and gives her the courage to go after the only girl she really wants. But coming out isn’t as easy as Delilah imagined, and moving past her parents’ death and the feelings of guilt she is left with is even harder. The intense passion between Ashley and Delilah is too strong to deny, but coming together means risking everything.
Discovering Delilah is an edgy, evocative, romantic story of friendship, family, and the courage to love.
Delilah’s parents have always been supportive of her. They, along with her twin, Wyatt, have wrapped Delilah in a wonderful cocoon of protection her entire life. The challenge with being stuck in a cocoon your entire life? You’re often hurt the worst by those who want to protect you the most. When Delilah’s graduation day rolled around, she took the biggest step of her life right before she walked. She told her parents that she’s a lesbian.
And then they died.
She lost them in a car crash and the strongest memory she has of them is the looks of disgust on their faces when she finally told them the truth. Disgust they aimed at her–all because she told them she was gay.
Now, Delilah’s been left with a legacy of shame and guilt a mile long. She’s not even one hundred percent sure she is gay. She’s been with guys, but it never felt right. Then she came to Harborside and met Ashley. Her world’s never been the same. Yet, how can she act on her feelings when she’s never even kissed another girl? What if Ashley doesn’t feel the same and their friendship is ruined.
Discovering Delilah is the second book in the Harborside Nights series–you all know I’m an immense fan of Catching Cassidy, book one. When I found out another release was planned, I made a point of offering to review it. Not just because of Melissa Foster’s writing, but because this book came with something her others didn’t. A disclaimer. A heads up to the reader that this is a lesbian romance and an explanation of why Melissa chose not to use a pen name to write this series, though she was advised against it.
As a longtime fan of any type of rebellious behavior, I signed up and started reading. And after a page one really didn’t give a damn that the main protagonists were two woman. Discovering Delilah is a relatable, haunting love story about a girl who’s been damaged–hurt by unmet expectations and shame society’s perceptions have fastened on her. Foster expertly contrasts the love Delilah so readily receives from her brother Wyatt, to the affection she desperately craves from her best friend Ashley. Delilah’s need for Ashley is almost a third character in the book. The character development in this book seems spot on–Delilah’s revelations about who her parents really were relevant and insightful. The romance is simultaneously sweet and intense. My heart ached for Ashley and Delilah, as they struggled even to hold hands in public.
I don’t get on my soapbox often, but there’s a message here that can’t be ignored. We need diverse books. We are not a one-size-fits-all world. So why should our characters fit the same mold? I applaud Melissa, and look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
Bottom-line: Discovering Delilah is an excellent read for all romance lovers.
